Liar Liar
Released: 1997
Comedy
Starring: Jim Carrey, Maura Tierney
Director: Tom Shadyac
Rated: PG-13
Running Time: Stupid 86 minutes wasted that I can never have back
The breakdown: A fast talking lawyer keeps breaking promises to his little boy and the boy wished on his birthday that his dad couldn't lie for 24 hours.
This is a stupid stupid movie. I had never seen it before last night and I was just going through the guide looking for new movies I had not seen so this one fit that bill. I've always hated Jim Carrey, ever since he left In Living Color, he has ceased to be funny. Before that I thought he was VERY funny.
Anyway, he's a big time lawyer trying to make partner at his firm so he does anything to get ahead, including missing his son's birthday party in favor of sleeping with the boss.
The boy gets tired of his dad always saying he's going to spend some time with him, but he never does, so he makes a birthday wish. He wishes that his dad cannot lie for 24 hours. Of course, this wish comes true, somehow, and it has terrible timing. Jim Carrey's character has the biggest case of his career on that day and he needs to lie to get his client what she wants in a divorce.
He wins the case on a technicality and realizes his son is more important by the end of the film. It's not touching, it's not sweet, and it's not funny. Jim Carrey is incredibly obnoxious and annoying in this one.
Skip it.
I give it 1 out of 5 stubs for good acting from the supporting cast.
